ORLANDO, Fla. – Dec. 17, 2015 – Orlando Pride has acquired midfielder Rebecca Edwards and the rights to defender Kristen Edmonds from Western New York Flash in exchange for a 2016 second-round draft selection (No. 11 overall) and a 2017 first-round draft selection, the team announced today. Per Club and league rules, additional details were not disclosed.
“Both Becky and Kristen are excellent additions to our squad, adding depth, quality and experience,” said head coach Tom Sermanni. “They have significant experience at the professional level and are familiar with playing alongside each other, something we believe will be important as the players begin training and learning to develop their own style of play as a team.”
Since making her debut in 2010 with FC Gold Pride, Edwards, 27, has made over 120 appearances at the professional level, playing for various clubs in the United States and in Europe.
Edwards’ honors include a WPS Championship with Western New York Flash in 2011 and Community Player of the Year in 2013 for her community service in the Portland area, while featuring as a member of the Portland Thorns.
At the international level, Edwards received her first call-up to the U.S. Women’s National Team training camp roster in November 2011, after an extensive career at the youth national team levels. Her national team accolades include a gold medal as a member of the U.S. U-20 Women’s National Team that captured the FIFA Youth World Cup championship in Chile.
Edmonds, 28, began her professional career with the Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues in 2009. During her time with Hudson Valley, Edmonds was named co-captain, registering five goals and five assists in 25 appearances as the team won two regular season championships.
After brief stints in Russia and Iceland, where she won a Pepsidelid League Championship and appeared in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, Edmonds returned stateside in 2014, signing with Western New York Flash.
