All Star Watch: Early Look at City’s Potential Candidates

All Star Watch

It’s never too early to start thinking about the All Star game. Last week, MLS announced that the All Stars will be taking on Real Madrid at Soldier Field in Chicago on August 2nd. With an opponent like that, this year’s MLS All Star game is going to be better than ever. But who will get chosen to represent the best of the best in MLS? We think these Lions have a pretty good shot.

Jonathan Spector
After just six weeks in MLS, Spector has been named to the MLS Team of the Week three times. He’s made some critical plays for the Lions, including a save on the goal line against the New York Red Bulls.

Cyle Larin
Larin has scored four goals in six weeks for the Lions. He’s appeared in MLS Team of the Week three times so far this season. Look for him to secure his second consecutive all-star appearance this season.

Joe Bendik
The Lions defense is on fire with two shutouts this season. Bendik has appeared in MLS Team of the Week three times this year. Some argued that Bendik should have made the roster last season. A selection this year would be his first as a pro.

Will Johnson
Serving as the interim team captain while Kaká is out with injury, Johnson has played a critical role in the team’s four home victories this season. He’s earned two assists and scored his first goal as a Lion in the team’s last match against the LA Galaxy. He made his first appearance on MLS Team of the Week in Week Seven.

Kaka
Yes, he’s injured right now, but expect Kaka to push for a spot on the roster upon his return. He has made the All-Star team in both of his first two season in MLS, and should have plenty of time to make in impact before selection time.

Carlos Rivas
A dark horse candidate, Carlos Rivas could just be a goal scoring streak away from earning all-star honors. The winger has had an incredible impact on the Orlando City offense in the early going, and if he is able to pair some goal with his assists you could easily see Rivas and Ronaldo in Chicago on August 2nd.
