The Development Academy teams had mixed results against IMG Academy at home this past weekend.
The U-14s kick-started the weekend with a convincing 12-0 win over the Brandenton-based club. Julian Kennedy and Mario Licor led the way for City, with both players notching a hat-trick respectively.
While discussing the game, Orlando City U-14s Head Coach Darren Powell said, “The team played well with the ball for the most part this past Saturday. We were able to have six developmental players play in their first academy game, and they all adjusted very well, which was pleasing to see.”
Later that afternoon, the U-16s fell 2-0 to IMG as they struggled to capitalize on their early opportunities. IMG found the back of the net twice – in the 30th minute and the 55th minute – putting the match out of reach for the Lions.
However, Orlando City U-16 Head Coach Jeff Negalha remains positive about his side’s effort saying, “We had some very good chances early in the match to go ahead, but we weren't able to convert. We got caught on the counter twice and they made two plays in the box. I like the effort and intensity of our team though. We continue to try and do the right things daily in regards to competing, ball possession, and pressing. We will see more growth with this level of commitment.”
The U-18s battled IMG to a 2-2 draw, after conceding a late equalizer in the 85th minute. IMG moved ahead first in the 25th minute, but Benjamin Michel leveled the score-line 12 minutes later.
Orlando City doubled their lead in the 54th minute when Gorka Aperribay tucked his effort away, providing a 2-1 edge for his team. However, IMG fought back to equalize when Ian McCauley scored with five minutes remaining in the match.
