0 - Goals allowed on set pieces
In the final moments of Orlando City’s March 7 game in Colorado, just before the coronavirus pandemic shut down the sports world, the Lions conceded a corner kick goal to Rapids center back Drew Moor. Since then, Orlando has not allowed a single tally on set pieces, which could come in handy against Minnesota United on Thursday night. In every single game in which they’ve scored, the Loons’ first goal has come on a set piece, with five of their nine goals overall coming on restarts.
80 - Ruan getting involved
For the first time at MLS is Back, Ruan led Orlando City in touches, registering 80 on the night against LAFC. It was part of an extremely impressive night for the Brazilian speedster, who led the team in fouls drawn with three (including one inside the box for a penalty kick), tackles with four, and ball recoveries with nine, an honor he shared with Sebas Mendez. Ruan also won nine of his 13 duels and crossed in the ball that led to Orlando’s equalizing corner kick.
6 - Pereyra’s passing proficiency
Orlando City No. 10 Mauricio Pereyra has caught the eyes of many with his phenomenal play at MLS is Back, and the Uruguayan continued his brilliance against LAFC. Matched up against what many consider the league’s best midfield, Pereyra had a game-high six key passes, one fewer than the entire LAFC team combined. 29 of Pereyra’s 44 total passes were in the attacking half of the field, and he yet again helped out defensively, contributing two tackles and four recoveries.
35.7% - Minnesota possession
Minnesota United have proven that you don’t need possession to be effective. The Loons barely had the ball in either of the knockout round games against Columbus and San Jose, but won the first in penalties and dominated the latter. With just 35.7% possession, Minnesota was able to score four times, including twice in a 90 second stretch in the first half. Orlando City, who have held the possession advantage in four of five tournament games, will have to be aware not only of Minnesota’s set piece ability, but of their counter-attacking skill as well.
