With the Women’s World Cup around the corner, Orlando City’s U-14 girls’ team showed up and won the Florida Premier League title with their 2-1 victory over Boca United, capping off an impressive 6-1-1 campaign.
The win earned them the right to represent the State of Florida at the National Premier League finals in July.
It was Orlando City’s second youth FPL title of the year with the U-13 Boys’ team crowned champions earlier this month.
The 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup kicks off this weekend, and the State of Florida is well represented on the U.S. roster. Abby Wambach played collegiately at the University of Florida, where she led the Gators to their first National Championship as a freshman in 1998. Goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris, of Satellite Beach, is the lone Floridian on the roster.
The United States will play in Group D with Sweden, Nigeria, and Australia. Their first game will be on June 8th against Australia.
In the 2011 Women’s World Cup in Germany, the U.S. fell to Japan in penalty kicks in the Final. It was the third appearance in the Final, winning both the 1991 and 1999 World Cups.
