HARRISON, N.J. (August 12, 2017) – In the final match of a three-game road trip, Orlando City SC (8-10-6, 30 points) fell, 3-1, to the New York Red Bulls (12-9-2, 38 points) Saturday night at Red Bull Arena. Peruvian midfielder Yoshimar Yotún made his Orlando City debut.
“So many positives, but the one negative is just another game management, game recognition issue,” Lions Head Coach Jason Kreis said. “We go into every game with a positive mindset that we can win. To me, our schedule the rest of the way is favorable. We have to do a couple of things. We have to win our home games. We’ve got to knick a couple on the road. We have every opportunity to do that as well.”
The match saw Yotún make his debut. It also saw defenders Léo Pereira and Tommy Redding and forward Carlos Rivas return to the starting XI. Orlando City was without Jonathan Spector and Dom Dwyer. Dillon Powers, who was acquired via trade from Colorado on Aug. 10, was in the 18-man lineup.
The Lions got on the board in the 18th minute when Rivas blasted home a close-range shot. Seconds after his chip shot went just over the bar, Rivas raced onto a through ball from Kaká to score his fifth goal of the season.
New York responded forcing an own-goal from Pereira in the 30th minute and before goals from Bradley Wright-Phillips in the 60th minute and Sean Davis in the 80th.
In the 73rd minute, Kaká nearly scored from a corner kick when his service fell to the far post but was cleared off the line. Yotún had a chance to bring the Lions within one in the 77th minute, but his shot rang off the bar and went straight down and out.
“Really happy with his performance,” Kreis said of Yotún. “Really happy with his mentality, his work rate. He shows you what kind of player he is but also what kind of man he is. He doesn’t back down from anything.”
Kaká was shown a straight red card in stoppage time following a Video Review of a playful interaction between Kaká and former teammate Aurélien Collin.
The Lions return to Orlando City Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 19, to host Columbus Crew SC.
