ORLANDO, Fla. (Nov. 11, 2015) -- Orlando City SC's President and Founder Phil Rawlins will be awarded the 2015 Dick Pope Legacy Award for the Club's contribution to strengthening the sustainability of Florida's hospitality and tourism industry.
"From igniting a global fan following to partnering with local organizations to attract international visitors, we have emphasized our commitment to evolving into a successful, globally recognized soccer club from day one," said Rawlins. "This award is a testament to our team's hard work and dedication toward achieving our goals."
During its inaugural Major League Soccer (MLS) season, the Lions have:
- Welcomed fans from over 50 countries and 50 states within the United States at the Orlando Citrus Bowl;
- Partnered with Experience Kissimmee, extending the organization's outreach to visitors from around the world; and
- Provided valuable Transient Room Nights through its relationship with the Grand Bohemian Hotel to accommodate international travelers.
The award is given annually by The Grand Tour Gala Foundation in honor of Dick Pope Sr., who founded Cypress Gardens in Winter Haven, becoming the state's first park-like attraction in 1936--thus, revitalizing Florida's tourism industry after World War II. Pope was considered Florida's greatest promoter.
The ceremony will take place on Nov. 13 at The Dick Pope Legacy Award Luncheon at the Wyndham Resort on International Drive.
