Orlando City SC has not only brought world-class soccer to Central Florida, but it has also embraced an army of supporters who wear purple with pride and unite for their community.
In a time when everyone reflects on the positives in their lives and give thanks to those around them, Orlando City’s band of purple-clads have once again come together—proving their lasting relationship and connection to their city is as strong as ever.
A woman in Parramore—the current and future home of City’s stadium—found herself in a very difficult situation when another relative, this time a brother, was killed – leaving behind two boys ages 14 and 16.
As an employee of Stop the Violence and Embrace in Parramore, she did not hesitate to take her nephews into her home with hopes of giving them a better future. While her church donated a larger home to accommodate the growing family of two teenagers, a husband, wife and child of their own—the home was more than a “fixer upper” and in need of many severe repairs.
Once Orlando City’s Kay Rawlins learned of the situation, the rest was history.
“I first heard of the woman’s story through her colleagues at Stop the Violence and Embrace in Parramore. Coincidentally, I received an email from an Orlando City Alumni, Paul Holmes, who currently works for Lowes, asking if he could get involved in any projects,” said Rawlins. “I put them in touch as well as called one of our supporters who is well connected in the construction industry.
“I am amazed by how quickly everyone came together. From donating major kitchen appliances and home furniture, to construction supplies and paint, the house has been completely renovated,” she added.
Through the collaboration between the Orlando City Foundation, Levy of Remediation Specialists, Lowes, Sherwin-Williams and over 70 volunteers of our official supporter clubs, the Ruckus and Iron Lion Firm, the home is near completion this weekend.
Over $10,000 worth of supplies have been donated for this project.
Many official club partners, including Publix and Papa Johns, have also made contributions by supplying water, food and snacks for the volunteers on-site throughout the month of November.
“We are grateful for our supporters and partners, and their willingness to help us make a difference in a family’s life. We at Orlando City cannot speak any more highly of our growing network of supporters,” said Rawlins.
