Orlando City U23s Move to Top of Division with 5-0 Win
Annarumma records first hat-trick and pushes the Lions to win over Mississippi Brilla
SANFORD, Fla.— The Orlando City U23s moved to the top of the Southeast Divison on Sunday, July 7, with a 5-0 victory over the visiting Mississippi Brilla. Midfielder Michael Annarumma recorded his first hat-trick in Lion colors and helped guide the Lions to their second consecutive win.
The Lions began the match with a powerful start when Midfielder Michael Annarumma gave the U23s a one-goal lead in the opening minutes. Annarumma’s goal occurred in the second minute of play and stemmed from a skilful touch from Striker Tyler Blackwood. The Englishman calmly received the ball with his back to goal and flicked it on for Annarumma, who wasted no time slotting his strike into the back of the net.
Annarumma, who made only his second start of the season, was heavily involved in the Lions’ attack and would find the back of the net just moments after scoring his first goal. In the 16th minute of play, Pre’Valus charged down the right-hand side of the pitch and pulled the ball back into the six yard box for Annarumma, who tucked it into the back of the net.
To begin the second half, the Brilla made several substitutions in an attempt to thwart the Lions attacking mindset. However, the U23s were relentless in their movement going forward and would score three goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half.
In the 55th minute of play, Blackwood received the ball and played a one-two with Pre’Valus just outside the area, before blasting his effort into the top corner. Shortly afterward, Midfielder Itode Fubara collected the ball on the edge of the area and curled his strike into the back of the net, giving the Lions a 4-0 lead.
Moments later, Annarumma coordinated a spectacular run that saw the midfielder notch his first hat-trick in Lion colors. In the 60th minute, Annarumma received the ball deep inside the U23s half and skipped past several Brilla defenders before striking a well-placed shot into the bottom corner.
The Lions will play their next match on the road against VSI Tampa Bay on July 13, before returning home to play their final home match against Fort Lauderdale Schulz Academy. The match against Schulz Academy will take place on Thursday, July 18 and is set to kickoff at 7 p.m.
