Sydney FC 5, Brisbane Roar 1 (recap / highlights)
Sydney FC held nothing back in the final game of Round 5, four goals in the second half to break a 1-1 deadlock for a 5-1 final against Brisbane. Portland Thorns FC forward Caitlin Foord led the way with a hat trick, while Teresa Polias and Princess Ibini also tallied for the home side. Chicago’s Yuki Nagasato scored Brisbane’s lone goal. Alanna Kennedy, Carson Pickett and Chioma Ubogagu each featured in all 90 minutes of the match. Ubogagu came close to leveling the game at 2-2 in the 64th minute but her left-sided shot blasted off the near post.
Melbourne City 3, Newcastle Jets 1 (recap / highlights)
The defending champions picked up their first win in four matches, knocking off Newcastle Jets 3-1. Yukari Kinga and Tameka Butt put City up 2-0 with goals in the 30th and 34th minutes, respectively. Utah Royals FC forward Katie Stengel made it a one-goal game in the 54th minute but Seattle Reign FC forward Jasmyne Spencer put things away with the Round 6 Goal of the Round in the 72nd minute. Orlando Pride midfielder Emily van Egmond played another 90 minutes for Newcastle, again leading her side in total touches.
Western Sydney 2, Canberra United 2 (recap / highlights)
After a scoreless first half, Western Sydney and Canberra combined for four second half goals as the two sides drew in Round 6. The Wanderers erased two, one-goal deficits to steal the point with Leena Khamis and Kylie Ledbrook getting on the scoresheet. Ellie Carpenter and Servet Uzunlar scored for Canberra, with Carpenter’s score spurring some controversy after Wanderer’s goalkeeper Jade Whyman was injured on the lead-up play.
Adelaide United 2, Perth Glory 2 (recap / highlights)
Rachel Hill and Perth remained unbeaten on the season this weekend, as Perth saw a 2-2 final at Adelaide United. Hill nearly setup Sam Kerr in the opening minutes, but Adelaide goalkeeper Sarah Willacy came up with a big save. Though Adelaide went up 1-0 in the 22nd, Kerr scored goals in the 40th and first-half stoppage time to put Glory up 2-1. The home side leveled through Veronica Latsko, her second of the day, in the 79th minute. In addition to playing all 90 minutes, Hill picked up an assist on Kerr’s second goal on a long, cross-field pass.
