The Westfield W-League was back in action this past weekend with three members of the Pride finding the back of the net in the round. Defender Carson Pickett got on the scoresheet for the Brisbane Roar, while midfielder Emily van Egmond scored her sixth goal of the campaign followed by a brace from forward Claire Emslie to earn a 4-0 shutout victory in the Melbourne Derby for City. Both van Egmond and Emslie earned Team of the Week honors for their performances.
Saturday, February 15:
Sydney FC 3, Western Sydney Wanderers 0
The first fixture of the weekend saw Sydney FC earn a 3-0 victory at home in the Sydney Derby. Houston Dash forward Veronica Latsko opened the scoring early with a finish in the second minute, followed by Ellie Brush in the 14th. Latsko’s former teammate at Houston and now Reign FC midfielder Sofia Huerta sealed the victory in the second minute of stoppage time for the Sky Blue, scoring the final goal of the match. The Pride’s Alanna Kennedy did not appear for Sydney on the afternoon.
Perth Glory 4, Brisbane Roar 2
To cap off Saturday’s double-header, Perth Glory took a 4-2 victory at home over the Brisbane Roar. The Glory scored three goals in the first half hour to take the lead, finding the back of the net in the third, 12th and 25th minutes respectively. Orlando Pride defender Carson Pickett scored her first goal of the W-League season to cut the deficit to two, but the rally from the Roar ultimately came up short. Pickett played the entirety of the match for the Roar, leading the visitors with eight crosses and tied for a team-high with two chances created.
Sunday, February 16:
Canberra United 3, Adelaide United 1
The Sunday slate opened up with Canberra United earning a 3-1 victory at home over Adelaide United. The two sides were level after the first 45 with Laura Hughes scoring in the 34th minute for Canberra only to be answered by a finish from Isabel Hodgson in the 45th. The home club however would score two unanswered in the second half, with finishes from Leena Khamis in the 68th and Portland Thorns forward Simone Charley in the 80th. Pride forward Camila did not appear for Canberra in the match, as she will miss the remainder of the W-League season with an injury.
Melbourne City 4, Melbourne Victory 0
Melbourne City took a commanding lead atop the table with a 4-0 victory in the Melbourne Derby to close out the weekend. Members of the Orlando Pride accounted for three of City’s four goals on the afternoon, with Emily van Egmond opening the scoring in the 21st minute in her return to the W-League, followed by a brace from Claire Emslie in the 31st and 50th minutes respectively. Emslie played the entirety of the match for City, while van Egmond logged 57 minutes to each earn Team of the Round honors.
