When Jason Kreis and Orlando City drafted Chris Mueller sixth overall in this yearâs SuperDraft, they said they expected him to contribute in 2018. Iâm not sure if anyone expected those contributions to come this early.
Through 6 games this season, Mueller has played in every one, started in 3, and scored in 2. Two weeks ago, his first career goal started a comeback against the Portland Timbers. Last Friday, his second of the season gave the Lions a comfortable 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
âIt can never be so rewarding as to see somebody that works so hard get success,â said Kreis following the win in Philadelphia. âChris scored that goal just on sheer will and a never say die attitude, he kept fighting for it and it ended up at his foot at the right time at the right spot.â
If there is something that stands out about Chris Mueller, itâs his hustle and determination. On one play on Friday night, he sprinted down field to pressure Union goalkeeper Andre Blake and the immediately sprinted up field to pressure a back pass and cause a turnover.
On his goal, Mueller powered through two defenders, recollected the ball after a Union defender got piece of it and then casually finished to the far post.
That effort from the rookie hasnât gone unnoticed by his peers.
âYou saw it in preseason, the kidâs a goal scorer,â said Mueller fellow attacker Dom Dwyer. âHeâs hungry, heâs working hard and heâs getting his rewards. I think he did fantastic tonight and Iâm very proud of him and excited for his potential. Iâll be keeping good tabs on him and pushing him in training.â
Despite the three game win streak and goals in his past two matches, Mueller is anything but content.
âWe are the farthest thing from satisfied right now and we are going to keep going. We will shoot for another three points next week.â
