U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 Play Continues Tonight

Open Cup Recap Strikers Molino

While Orlando City is getting ready to take on the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers in the Round of 16 of the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tonight in Camping World Stadium, their potential opponent in the next round has already been determined.

Last night, two Round of 16 matches were played, as the Chicago Fire took on the Columbus Crew and Real Salt Lake played Seattle Sounders FC.

The Fire took an early 2-0 off of two goals from striker David Accam. Columbus had the advantage on the offensive end, with 16 shots to Chicago’s 11. But the Crew could only manage to climb to one back on a penalty kick in the 79th and ended up falling short as the Fire advanced to the quarterfinals. If the Lions are able to get through Ft. Lauderdale, they would be pitted against Chicago in the quarters for the third time in four years.

Seattle advanced to the quarterfinals over Real Salt Lake on PK’s by a final tally of 4-2. Real took the lead on a penalty in the 43rd minute, but the Sounders responded with a goal from striker Nelson Valdez in the 51st minute and the draw held through regulation and two periods of extra time. Midfielder Eric Friberg netted the winning PK that sent Seattle through to the next round.

The majority of the Round of 16 matches take place tonight, including Orlando City’s. Other noticable matches include the NASL-New York Cosmos hosting the New England Revolution and a battle between the far-and-away top two teams in MLS, the Colorado Rapids and FC Dallas.

Below is an updated bracket, including last night’s results and tonight’s matchups.
