It was an exciting week in Australia’s Westfield W-League, with a combined 21 goals scored in the two matches on Saturday and the Melbourne Derby on Sunday. The results leave Sydney FC at the top of the table, but puts Canberra United within two points. Here is a breakdown of all the action from W-League teams featuring your Orlando Pride players:
Canberra United
Canberra United has long been hanging around in the third place slot on the table, but this weekend they proved that they want to be the best. Facing Perth Glory, Canberra scored a whopping seven goals in their win. Four of those goals came from Ashleigh Sykes, who opened scoring in the 6th minute and scored two goals in two minutes at the start of the first half. Ochs and Maher tacked on two goals in the first half, and Raso capped off scoring in the 49th minute. Canberra United now sits in the second-place slot in the table, and will face Western Sydney Wanderers this weekend on Sunday, January 22nd at 2:30pm local time.
Adelaide United
Adelaide United came into this weekend looking for their first win of the season. They earned it with a bang. Adelaide scored ten goals in their win against the Western Sydney Wanderers, with hat tricks by Huerta and Jones. Quigley opened up scoring for Adelaide in the 19th minute, and scored an additional goal in the 69th minute. Ladas and Chidiac also found the back of the net, rounding off an eight-goal second half by Adelaide. They still sit at the bottom of the table, but clearly they are capable of rising. Next weekend, they will play Perth Glory on Sunday, January 22nd at 6:00pm local time.
Brisbane Roar
Brisbane Roar faced off against the Newcastle Jets this weekend, dropping the match 2-1. O’Brien opened up scoring for the Jets in the 9th minute, and despite Brisbane finding an equalizer from Butt in the 45th minute, the Jets scored again in the 92nd minute to give them the win. This weekend, they will face Melbourne City on Sunday, January 22nd at 5:00pm local time.
Melbourne City
Melbourne City didn’t have far to travel this weekend as they faced Melbourne Victory in the Melbourne Derby. City dropped the match 2-0, a crushing defeat in a continuing slump for the former first-place team. Victory opened up scoring within the 1st minute at the feet of Dowie, and found another goal from Christine Nairn in the 31st minute to seal their win. Melbourne City will face Brisbane Roar on Sunday, January 22nd at 5:00pm local time.
