The holiday season is over, and the table has shaken up quite a bit in the Australian W-League. Melbourne City has dropped from 1st to 4th, with Sydney FC now sitting at the top of the table. Canberra United is still sitting at 3rd place, fighting to rise, and Adelaide United sits at the bottom of the table, still looking for their first win. Here’s a recap of all the W-League teams featuring Orlando Pride players.
Adelaide United
Adelaide United is still looking for their first win, but their holiday season brought a bit of cheer. They had just one loss and three draws in their last four matches. In Week Seven, they lost 4-1 against Perth Glory, with their lone goal coming from Huerta in the 65th minute. They were off during Week Eight, and came back in Week Nine to face the Newcastle Jets. They drew 2-2, with goals by Jones in the 14th minute and Chidiac in the 47th. In Week Ten they drew 1-1 against Melbourne City. They spent most of the game down after an early goal from Fishlock, but found their equalizer from Quigley in the 70th minute. In Week Eleven, they drew 2-2 against Canberra United, with goals in the 65th and 81st minute from Huerta. While Adelaide might be disappointed without a win, Huerta is on fire with three goals in the last four games. Next week they’ll face the Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday January 14th, at 7:30pm local time.
Canberra United
Canberra United is still sitting at 3rd place on the table, just five points behind Sydney FC. In Week Seven, they earned a massive 5-1 victory over Brisbane Roar. Their five goals came from three different scorers: Flannery (13th, 53rd minutes), Ochs (28th minute), and Sykes (50th and 56th minutes). They didn’t play in Week Eight, and came back in Week Nine to play Melbourne Victory. They won 2-1, with goals from Flannery (52nd minute) and Sykes (89th minute). In Week Ten, Canberra suffered a stunning loss to Sydney FC, with a final score of 6-1. Canberra’s lone goal came from Kinga in the 65th minute. In Week Eleven, Canberra drew 2-2 against Adelaide United, with both goals coming from Sykes in the 20th and 79th minute. In Week Twelve, Canberra United will face Perth Glory on Saturday, January 14th at 4:00pm local time.
Brisbane Roar FC
Brisbane Roar find themselves in 5th place on the table after an admittedly rough series of results over the holiday season. In Week Seven, Brisbane lost 5-1 to Canberra United, with their only goal coming from Gielnik in the 92nd minute. In Week Eight, Brisbane lost 1-0 to Sydney FC. The only goal of that match came from Ibini in the 54th minute. They were off Week Nine, and returned in Week Ten to face Melbourne Victory. They equalized after going down 1-0 early in the match with a goal in the 42nd minute by Chapman, but Dowie had a hat trick that earned Melbourne Victory a 4-1 win. In Week Eleven, Brisbane Roar broke their losing streak and beat the Western Sydney Wanderers 3-0. Their goals were scored by Butt (3rd and 6th minutes) and Mathyssen-Whyman (75th minute). In Week Twelve, Brisbane Roar will face off against the Newcastle Jets on Sunday, January 15th at 2:30pm local time.
Melbourne City
Melbourne City has fallen from their #1 slot during the holiday season. In Week Seven, they lost to the Western Sydney Wanderers 2-1. Melbourne scored early with a goal from Tabain in the 3rd minute, but Western Sydney countered. In Week Eight, Melbourne City lost to Perth Glory despite second-half goals from Fishlock (60th minute) and Luik (72nd minute). Melbourne City were off on Week Nine, and then came back in Week Ten with a 1-1 draw against Adelaide United. Again, Melbourne City was ahead with an early goal by Fishlock (25th minute), but Adelaide were able to find the equalizer. In Week Eleven, Melbourne City found a draw against #1 ranked Sydney FC, with a goal from Fishlock in the 75th minute. Despite Melbourne City’s fall from 1st to 4th, Fishlock is on a roll with three goals in four matches. They’ll face Melbourne Victory in Week Twelve on Sunday, January 15th at 4:00pm local time.
