Orlando Pride striker Marta has been nominated for BBC Women’s Footballer Of The Year. In 2016, Marta led the Brazilian national team to a home Olympics in Rio. She was one of the eight flagbearers in the opening ceremony and her team finished fourth in the tournament. She also played for FC Rosengard in Damallsvenskan and helped the team make it to the Quarterfinals of the 2016 UEFA Women’s Champions League.
Marta joined the Orlando Pride at the start of the 2017 season, and played her first match with the team as a substitute in the home opener against the Washington Spirit. Marta is credited as one of the greatest female footballers of all time, having won the FIFA Women’s Player of the Year five times in a row between 2006 and 2010.
Marta is nominated against Christine Sinclair (Portland Thorns, Canada), Ada Hegerberg (Olympique Lyonnais, Norway), Melanie Behringer (Bayern Munich, Germany), and Hedvig Lindahl (Chelsea, Sweden).
