It may not pop out in the stat sheets or on the field, but fullback Scott Sutter has been incredibly consistent throughout the 2017 season for Orlando. The stats show that Sutter has also been solid on the attacking side of the field as a defender, with one goal and three assists to his credit.
With Sutter, it’s much more than just the stats on paper. Since joining the Lions in the beginning of March, Sutter has played in 23 of a possible 25 games, starting in 21 of them. He has played in more games and played more minutes than any other defender on Orlando City’s roster this year.
The veteran defender, who has played professionally for the past 13 years, has been a playmaker on both ends of the field. Defensively, he’s a calm, composed and smart marker. He knows when to pressure attackers and when to assist on counter attacks. He’s always composed on the ball, never rushing clearances or haphazardly kicking the ball away. His quick feet allow him to break down other players defending him and create space for himself and others.
This skill transfers well into the attack for Sutter. His overlapping play is usually timed well, so he doesn’t get caught out defensively. Often times he gets into the attacking third, putting balls into the box and adding an extra attacker to help build up chances for the Lions.
This being his first MLS season, the Swiss international has adapted very well into the more physical style of the league and has become one of the most reliable players for Orlando this season. If the team looks to get back to winning ways come Saturday, Sutter will be a key component to that winning formula, on both offense and defense.
