The response to the coronavirus pandemic in Central Florida has been a community effort from the start. And Orlando City SC and the Orlando Pride are looking to do their part.
The club has donated almost 1,000 pieces of City and Pride apparel to the Million Mask Challenge, a grassroots campaign started here in Orlando that seeks to do exactly what its name says–create and distribute at least one million masks within Central Florida to help fight the spread of COVID-19.
“We are honored to be able to contribute materials to the Orlando community to help battle this pandemic,” said Orlando City SC CEO Alex Leitão. “Since we are unable to wear our jerseys on the field and t-shirts in the stands, we are happy we are able to put our gear to even more important use in order to help protect our local members and healthcare workers. We are continuously proud to be part of this community and to bring Orlando City from the sidelines to the frontlines.”
The Club's donation will help create approximately 5,000 total masks. 20-30 local members of the Million Mask Challenge will spend between 5 and 20 minutes creating each mask, depending on skill level, and expect to finish production by the end of this weekend. The materials are being distributed evenly among the members to ensure the fastest possible production time.
The masks are staying local, too. Every mask created will go directly to Orlando Health, with each individual member donating their product to a designated OH location.
This donation comes on the heels of Tuesday’s #ALLforORL announcement, an initiative to show support and drive business to small, local businesses while recreating the game day feeling for fans. More information on #ALLforORL can be found here.
