Team 1 2 Final
Time of Match- 7pm
Winter Park, Fla.- Orlando City SC added to their impressive string of performances throughout the 2013 preseason Thursday evening at Barker Family Stadium in Winter Park, Fla., with a convincing 6-0 win over the Rollins College Tars. Sporting Kansas City loanee Dom Dwyer led all Lions in scoring and recorded his first hat trick in Lion colors.
“I thought at times we were outstanding tonight, “said Head Coach Adrian Heath after the 6-0 win. “I’m delighted for the players as they’ve worked really hard against a very competitive team.”
The Lions dominated possession early in the match and were able to capitalize on their attractive style of play. In the fifth minute, 2012 USL PRO MVP Kevin Molino found a surging Bryan Burke on the right hand side of the pitch with a carefully orchestrated through ball. Burke received the ball well, skipped past the Tar defense and slotted the ball home putting the Lions up 1-0.
Shortly afterwards, Striker Dom Dwyer would score his first of the match in the 19th minute after Mbengue blasted a shot on target. The Senegalese midfielder’s powerful effort forced the goalkeeper to parry the shot into Dwyer’s path, who buried the ball home from six yards out.
The first half would continue to prove difficult for the Tars as the Lions added two more goals to their tally heading into the break. In the 26th minute, Defender Yann Songo’o clipped the ball over the Tar defense and found Burke who was barreling forward. Burke’s pace and solid first touch eluded the Tar defense and forced a collision with the goalkeeper, resulting in a penalty. Mbengue placed the ball slightly to the left of the goalkeeper, giving the Lions a 3-0 lead.
Dwyer notched his second goal of the match in the 34th, after Defender Luke Boden blazed past the Tar defense on the left hand side of the pitch and found the forward on the near post-who managed to sneak the ball past the goalkeeper.
The second half would begin very similar to the first period, as the Lions continued to control the tempo of the game and create numerous chances. Dwyer continued to terrorize the Tar defense and was able to secure his hat trick in the 55th minute. The Englishman received a through ball from Midfielder Freddie Braun and carefully lobbed the ball past the Rollins goalkeeper.
“Dom got on the end of things which I thought he would,“ Heath added on Dwyer’s performance. “The four Kansas City boys look like they’ve been here forever and I’m really pleased with everybody’s contribution in what was an outstanding performance.”
Mbengue would conclude the scoring for the Lions with a strong effort from just outside the 18 yard box. After a poor clearance from the Rollins defense, the midfielder was able to strike the ball into the corner, resulting in a 6-0 final score.
Orlando continues the 2013 collegiate friendly schedule this Monday, March 25, against the University of Tampa in Sanford Fla. The match will be held at Seminole Soccer Complex, at 7 pm, and will mark the Lions final college preseason game heading into the second leg of the I-4 Derby presented by United World Soccer against the Tampa Bay Rowdies on March 30.
