The Orlando City SC purple kit is one of the more recognizable uniforms in American soccer, and there’s a story behind the famous Lion’s head crest. Supporters have proudly donned Orlando City purple since the beginning; making it more than a color, because it defines us and makes us unique in the North American soccer landscape.
So here’s a question: What makes a great soccer kit? The color? The crest? The jersey sponsor? It could be those things, maybe others. Depends on your taste. I’ve put together a list of my top 10 jerseys from then and now. Do you have any you would add? Tell me in the comments below.
Newcastle United, 1996/97 Home Kit
Can’t go wrong with black and white color combination, but this famous kit is especially recognizable for its sponsor, Newcastle Brown Ale. It just makes sense.

The Cameroon National Team has become known for sleek, edgy soccer kits. Notice the faded lion in the background - a tribute to the national team nickname, Les Lions Indomptables, or, The Untameable Lions.
Juventus, 2011/12 Away Kit
Well, if you don’t like the color pink, then you probably won’t agree with this selection. Juventus wore these eye-catching uniforms in a season which saw The Old Lady win its 28th Scudetto in the club’s rich history.
Arsenal, 1970 Home Kit
Gone are the days of uncomplicated. These throwback, 70s-esque Arsenal uniforms are easy on the eye. The single cannon on the left chest representing the club’s nickname, the Gunners.
AC Milan, 1964 Home Kit
The vintage red and black of AC Milan is perhaps the most widely recognized color combination in European football. The Rossoneri have displayed this look since 1899.
USA, World Cup 1994 “Denim” Kit
Oh, that’s so 90s. These iconic kits worn by the U.S. Men’s National Team in the 1994 FIFA World Cup will always be remembered...for various reasons.
Orlando City, 2011 Red Kit
2011 was Orlando City’s first year of existence as the Lions would go on to dominate the USL Pro for three years before being awarded as a MLS expansion franchise. City won the USL Pro Championship in 2011 wearing these dark-red kits. The story behind them is what makes it such a rare look. The team wanted to wear purple kits for the season, but Umbro could not provide the color so the team opted for red.
Manchester United, 1991 Away Kit
You are not alone if you might have mixed feelings about these kits. One thing is for certain: they stood out.
Celtic FC, 2003/04 Home Kit
This classic green and white color combination is unmistakable. Celtic would go on to win the Scottish Premier League and the Scottish Cup sporting this ageless look on the pitch.
2017 MLS All-Star Kit
In some ways, a tribute to those memorable ‘94 World Cup jerseys, but with a modern spin. These adidas concept kits were worn last season when Kaká and the MLS All-Stars took on Real Madrid in the annual All-Star game. If you look closely, you can see maple leaves mingled in with the stars along the right torso of the kit, recognizing the Canadian clubs now competing in MLS.
