The 91st is an OrlandoCitySC.com blog that aims to approach the worlds game with a laid-back and relaxed approach. We’ll cover a range of topics, including today's look at how the video game FIFA can help bring fans closer to the game of soccer. Would you like to submit a post idea or contribute yourself? If you’re not already a fan of the world’s most beloved sport, just pick up an Xbox or PlayStation controller and play some FIFA. Forge connections with teams and players in every top league, construct your Ultimate Team, or play against your friend who thinks he knows more about soccer than you.
Playing FIFA deepens casual soccer fans’ understanding of the sport. Now don’t think that by playing a game of FIFA you will suddenly turn into the the next Lionel Messi - this isn’t miracle work! But the game teaches you about soccer. You’ll learn how different formations can create more space for wingers. Or why certain central midfield pairings posses the ball better than others. You’ll shoot free kicks, whip in the perfect cross, and perfectly time a crucial sliding tackle. FIFA helps you understand how scoring chances are created, and how soccer matches are won and lost. Take a possession-oriented approach, or sit back and wait for the opportune moment to launch a counter attack. Customize team tactics and alter starting line-ups. Try out Manager Mode and take the helm of your favorite club. Or, to really test your skills, compete online against fellow gamers around the world.
I can personally attest to the knowledge available through FIFA gameplay. Playing for years has expanded my knowledge of the world game considerably. And I’m definitely not the only one.
For many soccer fans, their interactions with the game have been the gateway to their soccer palate. Just ask Snoop Dogg - arguably the biggest celebrity FIFA player there is - how he started following soccer. Snoop is a die hard FIFA fan, and isn’t shy about letting the public know (I just wish he would release his gamertag so I could play him…). “Tha Doggfather” isn’t the only celebrity you may run into online in a game of FIFA. NFL receiver Victor Cruz and Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt were both present at an official FIFA release party and raised competition with the iconic rapper; posting pictures on social media of themselves playing a friendly (or not friendly, who knows) game of FIFA.
Soccer fan or not, playing FIFA will stimulate your interest in the beautiful game just like it has for millions of others. Play as Messi, play as Ronaldo, play as Kaka, or play as your favorite nation; the opportunities are endless, and you might be surprised at how much you learn about the sport on a worldwide scale.
