ORLANDO, Fla. (Jan. 24, 2022) — Orlando City SC has acquired 21-year-old forward Facundo Torres from Club Atlético Peñarol of Uruguay’s Liga Profesional de Primera División, it was announced today. Torres will join the Lions as a Young Designated Player pending the receipt of his P-1 Visa, ITC and medical evaluation on a four-year contract through 2025, with a Club option in 2026.
“We’re thrilled to have Facundo join us at Orlando City. He is an exciting player with a bright future,” said Orlando City SC Chairman Mark Wilf. “We will continue to work with our technical team to bolster the roster and build a championship-caliber team for our Club and community.”
“Facundo is a young player with a lot of potential and upside, and he is just beginning to make waves on the international stage,” said Orlando City General Manager and EVP of Soccer Operations Luiz Muzzi. “The danger that he creates on attack will be a real asset on the offensive end and we’re excited for him to step on the field in purple.”
A product of Peñarol’s youth academy system, Torres joined los Carboneros’ first team at the start of 2020. Since then, Torres has made 71 appearances across all competitions with the Uruguayan club, including appearances in the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana, scored 16 goals and added 15 assists in those matches. He also played a major role in leading Peñarol to the 2021 Liga Profesional de Primera División title, scoring in the championship match.
On June 4, 2021, the Montevideo, Uruguay, native made his senior international debut for his home country in a 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Paraguay. Torres entered the match as a second-half substitute for his first senior minutes at the international level. He was most recently named to Uruguay’s final roster for the next round of FIFA World Cup Qualifying against Paraguay (Jan. 27) and Venezuela (Feb. 1).
Torres has since made a total of 10 appearances, including five matches in Copa América 2021 and provided his first assist for Uruguay in the same competition. Before featuring for the senior national team, he played 34 games combined for Uruguay’s U17 and U20 sides, scoring a total of 15 goals for the nation’s youth teams.
