ORLANDO, Fla. (June 24, 2024) – Orlando City SC has loaned defender Abdi Salim to Detroit City FC of the USL Championship until the end of the 2024 season, it was announced today.
“This last half of the year will be a great chance for Abdi to test himself against a different league and continue getting valuable competition minutes,” said Orlando City EVP of Soccer Operations and General Manager Luiz Muzzi. “We’re excited to watch his development there over the next few months and look forward to seeing him take advantage of this opportunity.”
The 23-year-old has featured four times in two starts for the Orlando City First Team since being selected No. 17 overall by the Lions in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft. Over the past two seasons, Salim has made an additional 17 starts in 20 appearances for Orlando City B in MLS NEXT Pro, scoring two goals in that span.
The Syracuse University product has made five appearances at the international level for Somalia’s national team since making his debut for the African country on Oct. 14 of last year, three of which came in FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Based out of Michigan’s largest city, Detroit City plays in USL Championship’s Eastern Conference, where Le Rouge currently sits fifth in the table with 23 points through 12 matches.
