VANCOUVER (June 9, 2018) – In the third match of a five-game road trip, Orlando City SC (6-7-1, 19 points) fell 5-2 to Vancouver Whitecaps FC (6-5-5, 23 points) on Saturday at BC Place. Sacha Kljestan scored his third goal of the season.
“At the moment you can’t play 90 percent well. You forget about the 10 percent,” Lions head coach Jason Kreis said. “For me, that’s the difference right now. Because again, another night where we start off the game and we’re just dictating things, bossing things on their field, and then we give the ball away one time in the middle of the field, we’re disorganized and they go right down the field and score the very first chance that they have. Maybe that’s what we need to be focused on, is the 10 percent.”
Vancouver opened the scoring in the 36th minute when Alphonso Davies found Kei Kamara.
The Lions were reduced to 10 men when Mohamed El-Munir was shown a second yellow card in the 58th minute.
Orlando City leveled the score when second-half substitute Tony Rocha found Kljestan, who slotted it inside the far post in the 64th minute.
Davies scored the eventual game-winner in the 76th minute. Kamara scored from the penalty spot in the 85th minute after Vancouver was awarded a penalty kick upon Video Review. Yordy Reyna and Nicolas Mezquida also scored in the waning minutes.
Dom Dwyer scored his seventh goal of the season on the final touch of the game. Chris Mueller and Josué Colmán were credited with assists.
Goalkeeper Joe Bendik made four saves, including his 500th career MLS save. Bendik is City’s all-time leader with 272 MLS saves.
The Lions visit the Montreal Impact on Wednesday, June 13, at 7:30 p.m. ET. City then plays its U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 match at D.C. United on June 20 before returning to Orlando City Stadium on June 23 against Montreal.
