ORLANDO, Fla. (April 28, 2021) - Orlando City SC has signed first round MLS SuperDraft selection Derek Dodson to a one-year First Team contract, with Club options in 2022, 2023 and 2024, the Club announced today. Dodson will be added to the team’s Supplemental Roster.
“We’re excited to add Derek to the group now after allowing him to return to Georgetown for a majority of his senior season,” said Orlando City SC EVP of Soccer Operations Luiz Muzzi. “A team captain there this year and in 2019, he’s shown himself to be someone that leads from the front, has a great appetite for goal and comes in ready to put in the work for the season ahead.”
Dodson, 22, was taken by the Lions eighth overall in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft with their first pick of the draft. The Aurora, Ill. native joins the Lions following four years at Georgetown University. In his senior season, the forward played seven games, scoring two goals and providing three assists
During his time in Washington D.C., Dodson recorded 54 starts in 72 appearances, scored 32 goals, including one in the team’s 2019 NCAA National Championship win and 10 total game-winners, and provided 14 assists. The 22-year-old was a two-year captain at Georgetown, three-year First Team Big East honoree, including 2020, and the 2017 Big East Freshman of the Year.
